Beit Midrash - Everywhere

From the Torah stories it seems strange, on one hand Yaakov was the "Av" that was most out and about. He was working for Lavan and then running around a lot. But the Torah calls him "Yoshev Ohalim. Rav Yerucham Levovitz says that Yaakov Aveinu was called "Yoshev Ohalim" because he was always in the "Beit Midrash". Rav Yerucham explains that Yaakov brought the Beit Midrash with him wherever he went. He refers to Rambam in Moreh Nevuchim 3.51 who says that the ultimate way to serve God is to be always thinking about him even when working and doing other mundane tasks. That was Yaakov who was always "Learning" outside not necessarily in the proverbial Beit Midrash and that is the real "Yoshev Ohalim" that we must strive to become.

Interestingly the Ibn Ezra in Bamidbar on the Pasuk of Tzizis says that although according to Halacha one must wear Tzitzis during Kriat Shema, the real mitzvah should be to wear Tzizit all day to remind us not to sin. During Kriat Shema, the Ibn Ezra says, one generally won't sin anyway but it is during the rest of the day that wearing Tzitzit really matters.
